What are my 'Volunteering preferences'?

This guide will explain what your Volunteer Preferences are and the benefits to filling them out.

One of the fantastic features on Do-it.org is the option to customise your profile, so you get personalised suggestions for volunteering, and regular updates from your favourite organisations on Your Dashboard. The Volunteering Preferences is where you can keep this information up-to-date.

From the Your Do-it button in the top right-hand corner:

select Volunteering Preferences from the drop-down menu:

This is the first thing you'll see:

1) Change profile picture

This is the same option as you get in Account Settings; if you click on 'Change profile picture' it will open a menu where you can select an image from you computer:

Any normal picture will work here, in most cases. If you're having trouble uploading a profile picture, make sure:

  • the file type is a JPEG; PNG; or GIF
  • the file size is no larger than 1Mb
  • the pixel size is around 500x500

If you still have trouble, submit a request for help.

2) Your location

If you enter your postcode in here, then you will start to get Suggested Opportunities in Your Dashboard which are near you.

As it says: "We only use your postcode to suggest opportunities near you. This information will never be displayed on the site".

3) Your interests

If you select some interests, then your Suggested Opportunities on Your Dashboard will be opportunities involving these interests.

You can select a maximum of 5 interests.

Please note: under the categories Culture & Sport, and Crisis & Poverty, there are lots of interests so please scroll down to see them all!

4) Skills you want

If you choose some skills you would like to learn or improve during your volunteering, then your Suggested Opportunities on Your Dashboard will try to match these skills.

You can select a maximum of 5 skills.

5) Skills you already have

Sometimes, an organisation will need volunteers to already have certain skills to be able to perform the volunteering role. If so, they will ask for people to have those skills in order to apply. If you say you have some skills here, then your Suggested Opportunities in Your Dashboard will try to match opportunities with these criteria.

You can select a maximum of 5 skills.

6) Activities you want to do

If there are some particular activities you would like to do as a volunteer, you can select them here, and your Suggested Opportunities in Your Dashboard will include these activities.

You can select a maximum of 5 activities.

Please note: under the categories Practical; Professional; and Supporting Others, there are lots of activities so please scroll down to see them all.

7) Your availability

This section allows you to say when you are available for volunteering. This means your Suggested Opportunities in Your Dashboard will try to show only volunteering roles at these times.

8) Save

Whether you make one change or lots of changes, don't forget to press Save!
